The George Townhouse, Shipston Upon Stour

8 High Street, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, CV36 4AJ, 01539 888025, Visit Website

The bar is a lively hub at The George and is a must-visit watering hole. Its laid-back atmosphere and flop-into sofas and armchairs make you feel at home and lure you into lingering a little while longer.

There are several spaces for relaxing – step into the Parlour and nibble on delicious treats or let the chef rustle you up something special in the Garden Room. When the weather’s fine, we can’t get enough of the outdoor terrace for a spot of al fresco dining. The food at The George is on everyone’s lips, with steaks that make your mouth water and sharing boards that you just won’t want to share!

There are 15 beautiful rooms to choose from and while they’re dressed in contemporary furnishings, they remain sympathetic to the 18th century building. Pops of colour mingle with antique furniture, exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, wood panelled walls and sash windows – a combination that you can’t help but fall in love with. Oh, and don’t forget the retro touches with the rotary dial telephones, too.

There’s something relaxing about the soft shades of blue and grey in the bedrooms that make you want to snooze, that’s if you can resist a long soak in the rolltop bath. You’ll even find an in-room bath in some of the bedrooms.

The local area

Small but perfectly formed, Shipston-on-Stour is an adorable, picturesque town in Warwickshire. Cobbled courtyards and winding alleyways date back to medieval times and every nook and cranny of the town is filled with history. You can spend hours meandering through the streets; popping into butchers, bakeries and small independent shops, before stopping off at a pavement café for a coffee and a good dose of people watching. Known as the gateway to the Cotswolds, Shipston is perfect for exploring many of the honey-hued villages. The George is also just 20 minutes’ drive from Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare. You’ll find plenty more places on the map that aren’t too far afield, including Batsford Arboretum, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and Sudeley Castle and Gardens.
